Don’t Count Me Out

Why do we count?
To find out how many there are
So how many are there? Is that a lot?
Compared to yesterday, yes. To last Monday, no.
But is that a lot?
Compared to this city, no. That country, yes.
Counting the minutes till you come home
It’s taking years

I thought you said we count to find out how many there are.

We count to get a number with which to compare our desires
degrees of warmth
dollars in the bank
fish left in the sea
children going to sleep with love, food and warmth
minutes we live before we die
women at a table doing math
just the right number to count on
