What happens at Math Lab?

Our five-day summer institute offers teachers, coaches, administrators, policymakers, professors, teacher educators, and anyone with an interest in K-12 mathematics teaching methods the opportunity to observe, analyze and participate in the teaching of a group of 24 students who will enter 5th grade in the New York City public schools this fall.

Each day at Math Lab involves a pre-brief about the day's lessons, two hours of observing lessons taught by Math Lab facilitators, time to debrief, and study of student work.  Towards the end of the week, participants also have the opportunity to work one-on-one with students to try out the teaching practices we study together in the Lab.  Afternoon sessions offer the opportunity to study the progression of fractions standards and related student understandings required by the Common Core (Next Generation Learning Standards), and to discuss implications of our work at Math Lab and plan for the upcoming school year.

Feedback from Previous NYC Math Labs

“Attending Math Lab was not only one of, if not the most, powerful PD experiences I’ve had, but public teaching also helped reignite my passion for teaching when I felt it was gone.”

“It was inspiring to watch others in action. It truly helped me reflect on my own teaching.”

“This is really a way to improve public schools (and thank you for being excellent models)!”

“At Math Lab, I learned so much about the importance of building a math community and giving multiple opportunities for students to explain their thinking.”

“I used to think that because I hated math, I would be horrible at teaching it too. Now I think because of my mistakes I can understand and teach math better!”

“I have received and delivered professional development in many formats and contexts during my career and can say that this experience was among the most inspiring and impactful I have encountered.”
