Place Value Lesson Study (4th Grade classroom)

Participating teachers will have an opportunity to watch a lesson, observe the results of that lesson, practice conferring with students, and reflect on the experience with teachers from across the city.

Participation in the Place Value Understanding workshops is recommended but not required.

Below is the rough schedule for the day:
8:30 - 9:30 - Introduction: Planning team leads a discussion around how they imagine the lesson design supports students in developing a positive mathematical mindset and place value understanding.
9:30 - 10:45 - Lesson (including conferring opportunities for lesson study participants)
10:45 - 11:00 - Quiet reflection
11:00 - 12:15 - Debrief
12:15 - 1:15 - Lunch
1:15 - 2:30 - Discuss together implications for future work
2:30 - 2:40 - Reflection

Subtraction Lesson Study (Brooklyn)

Does subtraction always mean finding the difference between two quantities? Is it true that when you take away the part that’s the same, what you have left is the difference?

This study lesson will take place in a 2nd grade classroom, but the work is applicable K-3, and teachers from any grade are welcome to attend.  This all day study (8:30-2:50) involves observing the lesson, debriefing, and planning for future work in our own classrooms.  Teachers will be asked to bring curriculum materials from an upcoming lesson or unit to facilitate planning.

Per diem may be available for coverage so that teachers can attend.

Participation in an Operations & Algebraic Thinking Progressions workshop is recommended but not required.

Lesson Study (Place Value 2nd-4th Grade)

In this lesson study, teachers will first observe in a 3rd grade class, focusing on on the conferring of facilitators using the Place Value Continuum. In the second part of the study, participants will have an opportunity to confer with 2nd and 4th graders.

Participation in the Place Value Understanding workshops is recommended but not required.
